For many, the state name Montana brings to mind the rushing waters of a trout–filled river, the rugged peaks of a mountain range, and untouched, almost primitive wilderness. Toss in plentiful wildlife, winters that last from August to June, and residents whose idea of luxury starts with indoor plumbing, and most people probably expect that’s life in Montana. In fact, what might come to mind are scenes from movies like A River Runs Through It. And those aren’t necessarily incorrect versions of the reality in the west. Incomplete, maybe, but a good beginning.
Larry Pirnie, with his vivid colors and bold style, captures the independence and strength inherent in Montana and its people and adds to it a twist of down–home welcome. Just a glimpse of his unique artwork gives you that “two-finger wave on a back country road” feeling. But there’s a certain sophistication about his choice of color and an elegance to his brush strokes that convey the lifestyle it is possible to experience in the west.
That’s why we chose Larry as our “spokesperson” of sorts—because his brand of artistry communicates the full scope of the Living Style of the west and specifically Montana. “The Dream” is his response to our request for a commissioned piece that juxtaposes the spirit of the west with the style, and more importantly the lifestyle, that happens here. Electrifying, but at the same time soothing, it invites you to explore the independent, rugged side of your soul while surrounding yourself with all the elements of comfort and beauty a person needs. So come on in, take a deep breath, and enjoy the art of the possible.
As a boy growing up in Iowa, Larry Pirnie’s life was full of fantasies about the west—its heroes, landscape, history, and myths. Comic books, movies, Charlie Russell calendar prints, and annual family summer trips through the region fed those fantasies. In 1963 he received his BFA from Pratt Institute of New York. In 1978, after several years working in the advertising field, he moved to Montana. Even as his artwork becomes more and more recognized, the subjects of his pictures are always a mixture of his present realities and past fantasies with the west.
